Lonar Crater Lake

Short Trip to Lake with childhood friends

  • Lonar Lake lies within the only known extraterrestrial impact crater found within the great Deccan Traps basaltic formation of India.
  • The Lonar crater is the world's only salt water (with Ph = 11) lake in basaltic rock, believed to have been caused by a meteorite hitting Earth around 52,000 years ago.

  • It is surrounded by forests with a large variety of birds, particularly peacocks,owls,red-wattled Lapwings and ducks.
  • In the lonar lake there are number of medicinal and aromatic plants observed.
The Lonar Lake in Maharashtra, was formed about 50,000 years ago when a meteorite hit the surface. The saltwater lake that evolved in the resulting basaltic rock formation has a mean diameter of 1.2 kilometers (3,900 feet) and is about 137 meters (449 feet) below the crater rim. Numerous temples surround the lake, most of which are in ruins, except for a temple of Daityasudan, at the center of the Lonar town, which was built in honor of Vishnu’s victory over the giant Lonasur. The crater itself is a fun trek and the surrounding vegetation is a treat for birdwatchers. - See more at: http://www.touropia.com/impact-craters-on-earth/#sthash.mJhsOmV7.dpuf

  • A series of low hills surround the basin which has an oval shape (almost round) with circumference at top of about 8 km. The sides of the basin rises abruptly at an angle of about 75°.
  • One of the water sources for the lake is small river stream (Dhara), Sita Nhani.

  • Daitya Sudan Temple : Carvings similar to those seen at Khajuraho temples.

  • Several temples found on the periphery of the Lake are known as Yadava temples and also as Hemadpanti temples. Some temples from Chalukya Dynasty which ruled Central and Southern India between the 6th and 12th centuries.
